a. To start with, if one is living in a rented apartment and wishes to renovate the apartment he has purchased, then be practical about the time allocated for its completion. Since the more time it takes than proposed, the more money you would end up spending on rent.
b. Buying cheap materials for your kitchen, toilets, furnishing is a good option, right? No at all! That’s possibly the worst thing you could to your house as well as your pockets. Opting for branded items diminishes the risk of their getting deplorable with time.
c. In a country like India, where monsoons are phenomenal, not water proofing your walls is another mistake that can cost you heavily. Go for good paints that are water-resistant. Don’t dab all rooms with the same paint type. Every room is exposed differently to water, dust, oil and grime, so be specific about your choice of paints, right at the start, to avoid unnecessary hassles later.
d. An important yet not so likeable tip during home renovation would be to stop following trends. Stop purchasing expensive décor, art items and furniture pieces based on seasonal fads. As trends die out pretty soon, your favourite floral wallpapers will turn into an eyesore even before you can imagine.
e. Though hardwood floors and leatherette couch look great but reconsider buying them if you have young children and pets at home. With dogs scratching the pulp out of the couch and kids tarnishing your floors, think twice before investing on these costly items.
f. No matter how big your storage space is, you would always feel it isn’t enough. Be it your kitchen, or bedroom, storage area is a must. Never compromise on it for mere aesthetics. The number of items will always be on the rise and your storage, forever short of space. Always think of ample storage area prior hand.
g. You may or may not opt for a modular kitchen, but even if you go for simple drawers and cabinets, be sure to purchase branded ones to avoid having them replaced within 6 months.
h. If you are designing your own house, remember to take proper and accurate measurements of your rooms and buy furniture or accessories pro rata. Too big or too small accessories may make rooms look disproportionate and unappealing.
An initial quick glance at the lighting and sub structure of bathrooms could also save you few thousands in the long run. Smart choices are critical in optimizing resources and reaping maximum return on investments.
